Each Friday, the Spotlight features an ally who writes, reviews, publishes, or is in some other way involved with LGBTQI speculative fiction. Our guest this week is Rose Lemberg, editor of the new LGBTQI friendly poetry zine, Stone Telling.
Rose grew up with a jumble of native and semi native languages including Russian, Yiddish, and Hebrew. She began writing poetry and fiction in English as an adult after pursuing a Ph.D. in Linguistics at UC Berkeley. Her poetry has appeared in many places including Abyss & Apex (which published last year’s Rhysling nominated “Odysseus on the War Train”) and Goblin Fruit (which published this year’s Rhysling nominated “Godfather Death”), and her short fiction has appeared in G.U.D., Strange Horizons, and Fantasy Magazine.
Stone Telling is Rose’s newest project, an online magazine devoted to literary speculative poetry. The title is the name of a character from a story by Ursula K. Le Guin, and the first issue will feature a previously unpublished poem by Le Guin. The first reading period opened on the 14th of June, and will close on the 14th of August.
Rose is on LiveJournal and Twitter, and also maintains a Stone Telling LiveJournal community. She is currently a professor at a large research University in the Midwest.
Outer Alliance Spotlight #29: Spring Break Part 2 April 9, 2010

Normally, the Spotlight features an ally who writes, reviews, publishes, or is in some other way involved with LGBTQI speculative fiction. This Friday, however, marks the second of a two week break from the norm. Spring is here, and your faithful correspondent is overwhelmed with travel plans, so instead of interviews, you’ll get some links to April appropriate content elsewhere on the web.
This week, our focus is on submissions!
First, Bart and Kay over at Crossed Genres have teamed up with several awesome judges to put on the Science in My Fiction contest. Submissions opened on the 1st of April, and will run until the 30th of June. They’re looking for science fiction stories inspired by recent science news.
Second, Hellebore and Rue (edited by OA members, Catherine Lundoff and JoSelle Vanderhooft) is still open for submissions of lesbian magic user stories. Submissions close May 15th.
Third, Megan Arkenberg is looking for articles, fiction and poetry exploring the ways in which speculative fiction and politics interact. Her anthology, Crimethink, has a tentative deadline of May 15th.
And finally, on a non-submissions note, the Ursa Major Awards are open for voting until the 18th of this month (that’s just over a week from now!), so if you like anthropomorphic animal stories, movies, and art, the time to express your preferences is now.

Outer Alliance Spotlight #23: Catherine Lundoff February 26, 2010

Catherine is a lesbian identified bisexual, who married her partner of 16 years last September. She’s been writing since 1996, and has amassed a long list of queer speculative and erotic fiction sales, including the recent “Great Reckonings, Little Rooms” in Time Well Bent: Queer Alternative History, and “The Egyptian Cat” in Tales of the Unanticipated #30.
She received a Lambda nomination for the lesbian ghost story collection, Haunted Hearths and Sapphic Shades in 2008, and also won the Golden Crown Literary Award in the Lesbian Erotica category that same year for her short story collection, Crave: Tales of Lust, Love and Longing. She is currently reading submissions for a new anthology, Hellebore and Rue, which she is co-editing with JoSelle Vanderhooft.
Catherine is a regular at WisCon and Gaylaxicon, and she’ll also be appearing at MarsCon next week in Bloomington, Minnesota. If you can’t make it out to see her in person, you may find her online on LiveJournal, MySpace, Facebook, and GoodReads. She lives in Minnesota with her wife and two cats.
Submissions: Crossed Genres Calls for LGBTQ Spec Fic September 2, 2009

To complete our first year of publication, Crossed Genres is producing an oversized issue of speculative fiction wth LGBTQ themes.
Submissions will be open through the end of September. We’re looking for short stories (1000-8000 words), artwork (black-and-white) and related articles and essays (500-3000 words). We’ll also consider other formats we don’t usually consider for publication: b&w cartoons, book reviews, personal stories, etc., so long as they relate to the LGBTQ theme. We may also consider some related online-only content such as video or music (please query).
The issue will be released on November 1, and throughout the month of November we’ll be featuring a number of LGBTQ-friendly organizations on our website in our “Website Spotlight” section (Outer Alliance is featured right now). We’ll also be linking to articles of relevance in the “Headlines” section. If you know a website or blog you think should be included as a Spotlight or Headline, email us a link and tell us about it!
We’re very excited about this issue, and are working hard to make it our best one yet. Our purpose in deciding to use this theme in an issue is to help develop and encourage the conversation around queer speculative fiction, and to present some excellent queer spec fic for everyone to enjoy. Please help make it even better by spreading the word!
